Fabrics and care

Five fabrics and a coated one, and they do not age the same way. This is what each asks of the room and of you.

We choose velvet for tall headboards and anything meant to read soft before you touch it. It has a short dense pile that catches light and moves with a hand, so a palm print shows until you brush it the other way. Velvet is the one we would not put in a house with cats or in front of a sunny window. A claw mark sits on the pile and direct sun can shift the color over time.

Linen starts crisp and relaxes with use. Creases stay visible and we think that is part of its character. Faux fur is deep and forgiving, and it hides everyday touches better than a flat weave. Boucle has a looped, springy feel and holds its texture under light without going shiny. Corduroy is the quietest of the group, with ribs that give it a clear direction and a slight drag under the hand.

Counts are taken from the fabric named on each piece. Care notes are ours and apply to covers we sell, follow the label on the piece first.

Velvet55Deep pile that shows a hand mark and hides a seam, brushes one way.Vacuum with the nap, blot spills, keep it out of direct sun.
Linen19Matte weave with visible slub, cool to the touch, creases at the corners.Vacuum, spot clean with water only, it will show a water ring if soaked.
Faux fur13Long pile, warmest to sit against, sheds a little in the first weeks.Shake and brush, never heat-dry a cover.
Boucle3Looped yarn with a bumpy surface, hides wear, catches rings and claws.Vacuum with a soft brush, no rubbing.
Corduroy16Ribbed cotton look, the ribs flatten where you sit most.Brush along the rib, rotate cushions where you can.
Faux leather4Smooth coated surface, wipes clean, warms under a body.Damp cloth, no solvents, keep sharp objects away.

Velvet is the fabric most of our headboards wear, and it is the one that shows the most: a hand across the pile leaves a mark, sunlight across a season leaves a lighter band. Neither is damage. Brush with the nap and it comes back.

Linen is the opposite temperament. It creases at the corners on the first night and looks better for it in a year, but it does not forgive a spilled glass: blot, do not rub, and never soak it.

Faux fur sheds for a few weeks and then stops. Boucle hides wear and catches rings. Corduroy flattens where you sit most. Faux leather wipes clean and warms under a body. We say which fabric each piece wears on its card, and we count them in the table above.

Velvet shows light and hand marks more than any other fabric we use. That is the fabric, not a flaw.

Solid wood

77 pieces in the range name solid wood. Wood wants a damp cloth and nothing else, a room that is not parked next to a radiator, and a coaster. It will move a fraction with the seasons, a frame that creaks in January and not in July is doing what wood does.

Cedar outdoors is a different conversation, and we have it in the backyard article.

A walnut frame: wipe, do not polish, and keep it away from a radiator.
